As thin on plot as you tend to expect early one-reel comedies to be, Mr. Flip is about as lean as you'll find. Director 'Bronco Billy' Anderson and actor Ben Turpin had some evolving to do and were in early experimental stages. Some trivia: In the final scene, Turpin receives what is generally believed to be the first "pie-in-the-face." IMDb entry: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0236517/

John Bunny was the first major comedic performer of cinema. His short, plump figure (he stood 5"4' and weighed over 300 lbs.) and round face were internationally recognized as he starred in 173 short comedies from 1909 to 1914. Yet, for all of the fame he enjoyed during his acting career, he was almost immediately forgotten following his death in 1915. In "A Cure for Pokeritis", George Brown (Bunny) is a compulsive gambler who promises his wife (Flora Finch) he will give up his...

Long before teaming with Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy starred with Billy Ruge in a series of comedies as "Plump and Runt." It was relatively short-lived, as they did 35 films together in 1915 and 1916, mainly one reels. It was the pinnacle of Ruge's career, and he disappeared from movies a few years later. Hardy moved on to bigger things (no pun intended). In this short, Plump receives an announcement of a coming visit by a rich uncle. He can't wait to meet the beautiful wife and...

Silent comedy legends Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle and Mabel Normand at the 1915 San Francisco World's Fair Panama-Pacific Exposition. The theme of the expo was the newly built Panama Canal, and it also focused on San Francisco's newly rebuilt infrastructure following the earthquake of 1906. In 1916 the Biograph film company signed black comedian Bert Williams to write, produce, direct and star in two comedies. Williams created "A Natural Born Gambler" and "Fish." While hardly a breakthrough in shattering racial stereotypes (Williams was required by the studio to wear "darkie" makeup), a black production with a black cast was unprecedented. The response was tepid and Williams did not appear in any movies after Fish . Gambler borrows from Williams'...

Fatty Arbuckle and Buster Keaton team up as hotel bellhops. Some interesting props, including a horse-drawn elevator. Decent gags, culminating with a classic chase scene. The movie is not a classic, but it's typical Arbuckle and Keaton and a good illustration of the kind of comedy they did together. The IMDb entry is at http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0008874/

"Fatty" Arbuckle and Buster Keaton, arguably the greatest comedy team of their time, team up in a western comedy. Be warned, there is a scene in the middle that will offend some with its racist tone. This should not spoil the movie. The IMDb entry is at http://imdb.com/title/tt0009466/
